My daughter, Nora, 13, and I have lived in Palo Alto for six years now.
Nora just completed seventh grade at Jordan Middle School. Her class
mates include Steve Job's daughter and several other techy gene pools.
Nora uses such technology only to the extent that it helps her writing. Still
an avid writer, she has a portfolio that currently includes over fifty poems,
a dozen short stories and is now working on her first novel.
I am now a tenured, full-professor of International Business at San Jose State University with a joint appointment at the University of Michigan Business School in Executive Education. I also do a bit of consulting on cultural mergers and acquisitions for clients such as AMD/Fujitsu, Ford/Mazda, etc.
We both still like to ride horses -- Nora prefers trails and I'm beginning to focus on dressage, though trail riding and sunset rides on the beach are close seconds. We also are taking care of our spiritual side -- Nora is in her second year of a two-year "Coming of Age" program through the San Francisco Zen Center and sometime this year I will be taking the Precepts in Zen Buddhist under the tutelage of Tenshin Reb Anderson, a senior Dharma teacher at Green Gulch Temple in Mill Valley. One of my
jobs as her mother it to give her plenty of food for writer-fodder. I have
earnestly taken on this responsibilty--consciously as well as unconsiously.
