Class Letter '09

35 years??? Are you sure? Seems like yesterday. I always look forward to hearing news from and/or meeting up with old ASIJ classmates. A reunion in 2009 is a great idea.

We are still living in Kuala Lumpur, going on our fourth year in Malaysia and our 15th year overseas.   Unfortunately, I think my family (and myself) will have a very difficult time adjusting to the US when we finally repatriate.  KL is a very livable and pleasant city (except for the wild monkeys that visit our house daily).  We wouldn't mind staying 1 or 2 more years (at least to get us through this economic downturn), but the oil industry isn't doing too well right now, so we will have to see how things play out.   I am still Country President of ConocoPhillips Malaysia and luckily our business is growing quite nicely, which is unusual in this environment.

Our latest stress-filled activity was applying to colleges for our eldest daughter Sarah, a senior at the International School of Kuala Lumpur. Her top 4 choices (totally her decision) are Vanderbilt, SMU, Pepperdine, and Bucknell...if anyone can find any thread of reasoning or commonality between these 4 choices, please let me know. Ali is our younger daughter (14) and is already dreading life at home next year without a big sister around. She is thinking of boarding school to get away from the parents. I don't think so.

My parents are living in Greenwich Connecticut and still doing well, and my sister Melissa and brother Phillip are in Chicago and DC, respectively.   All these places are too cold for Maureen and myself after living in the tropics for the last 8 years.  Looking around for a nice retirement place, but we haven't even narrowed it down to a country yet.  Any suggestions?

All the best and keep in touch,

Mark Wheeler
