I am really sorry that I missed the gala event in Nashville this past fall, but I was travelling extensively and something had to give. It really looked like a fun affair! I am still in Denver, Colorado, although I've been considering a move for sometime. The timing isn't quite right at the moment, so I hope to stay put until the end of the summer, at least. I am now 100% engaged in medical research at the Webb-Waring Institute (affiliated with CU) after years of doing both research and teaching (pharmacology to medical/dental school students) at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. My two areas of interest are prostate cancer, specifically why it spreads to bone, and macular degeneration, which is a central vision loss that strikes the elderly. They seem totally unrelated, but they actually have some things in common. My partner, Troy Hartman, and I have two Airedale Terriers, Kavu and Stanley, known sometimes as Piggy and Pesty. The drought and the dogs have managed to convert the lawn into a moonscape, which we are in the desperate process of trying to conceal by building a largish deck. Despite my Japanese heritage, I obviously did not inherit any of those useful horticultural genes, but then again, my ancestors never had to garden in the desert. From a cultural aspect, Denver is somewhat desert-like as well, but we
are pretty much at the foot of the mountains, not far from skiing, Rocky
Mountain Natl Park, and outdoor activities. I try to get out and paddle
(whitewater kayak) as much as I can when the rivers are running but the
season tends to be short here. Since my mother passed away 2 years ago
and my father still resides in Tokyo (in the same house, if any of you
remember, near Roppongi) I've been getting back to Tokyo quite
frequently to check up on him. Roppongi is quite another story, however,
and Azabu Juban now has its own subway station. I've enjoyed reading updates from everyone, but this time I was particularly taken by the clip from Esther! Wow!! Hi Esther! I'll be in touch...we do go back a long, long, way! All my love and best wishes to everyone, Lucy Ghoda
