Class Update 2007

10/2002

Happy Holidays to you all…and here is the ’06 news from my family in Rochester, MI.

I am doing fine along with my husband Woody and our two kids. We have enjoyed a busy year with the drama and activities of our teenagers. Our oldest, Marguerite, is a senior now ( how did that happen so fast?) and her interests have involved us in a lot of theatre, choral singing, marching band and college research , campus visits and college applications She is applying to 4 Universities in two separate theatre dept’s; Acting Performance and Design and Production, each requiring an audition or portfolio interview. She prepared a portfolio documenting her set work from 8 shows as well as general artwork, and is memorizing 3 monologues for her upcoming acting auditions... She has been accepted so far to U of Michigan, (Carole’s Alma Mater) to their Design and Production BFA program. We are very proud of her.

Second child John, is now in 8th grade and is interested in aggressive skating, snow boarding, and playing drums. His new goal is to play the “quads” in the high school marching band drum line next year, and he has been practicing for that with renewed enthusiasm. John alsoClass of '74 Letter-2007.ems hosts practices for his rock band in Carole’s basement studio, which explains a few things about her art career these days. I figure when the kids are gone, I’ll have plenty of time for my own art again. John is very creative and the “idea guy” for his band and other group of friends. He is really growing and is now taller than his big sister.

I turned 50 and wanted to get out of the house, so we went to the Florida Keyes to snorkel and scuba as a family. I also treated myself to a marvelous trip to NYC to meet with ASIJ high school pal Tracy Stephens for galleries, theatre, meals and lots of talking. It was absolute Bliss, and a real highlight of my year to reconnect with Tracy and to pour over the details of our lives at this age. Our girls are similar in age and we had a lot of common ground to share… remembering also when we were their age while we were friends at ASIJ. It was a real meaningful one on one “high school reunion”. I would love to be able to do more of this with my other ASIJ friends…are thinking about possible opportunities you guys. The sole art project for me this year, other than my continued work as a juror and exhibition committee member for our local art center, was to transform an old violin into an artwork for the Rochester Symphony Orchestra.

My husband Woody has been quietly supporting everyone all this time, working at GM as a clay modeler in Automotive Design. He continues with his large scale clay bust sculpture in his free time. His artwork is now in galleries in Ohio and Seattle. This year he had a piece at The Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft, in a show called Life Insight-The Human Experience. He is constantly making new work in his studio.

We were home for Christmas, relaxing with Carole’s DClass of '74 Letter-2007.ems ad, who is in good health and good spirits, and with our dog Wallaby. For those of you who know my siblings… We got a long visit this summer from Ellen and her two grown girls from CO, and they brought along our new grand nephew Athen, to meet for the first time. Ellen is really loving being a grandma! Brad is doing his hotel development projects with his own Co. now, both in Tanzania and Costa Ricca. We get to se him when he passes through going from one place to the other. He is thriving and doing very well as a busy world citizen.

All for now. Peace on Earth to everyone, Love,

Carole Zak
